The origins of Carboneras lie in the 16th century, following the construction of the castle of San Andrés and the distribution of lands to soldiers who guarded the coast against raids by Berber and Turkish pirates. This initiative was led by the Marqués de Carpio, a nobleman who assumed sovereignty of the territory. Watchtowers had previously been used to defend the coast against invaiders during the Reconquest. In 1583, Felipe II approved the construction of the castle by royal decree. In 1688 the fortress passed into the property of the House of Alba, and at the time Carboneras began to expand beyond the castle walls. By the 18th century, the town was developing economically, with farming and fishing the chief industries. In 1813, Carboneras left the municipality of Sorbas and became independent. By the mid-1900's, the town was 2700 strong, with another 1000 outling villages such as Los LLanos de Don Antonio, Argamasón y El Saltador. By the early 20th century, the population had grow to 6,000, but it began to decline intil reviving again in the 1980s.
